Mrs Murphy
Welcome to Year 5
Our teacher is Mrs Murphy
π Our Autumn Term Learning Journey
Welcome to our Autumn Term class page! We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year, packed with exciting learning, hands-on activities, and special celebrations. Here’s a look at everything we’re exploring this term.
π Autumn 1: A Season of Discovery
Science – Properties of Changing Materials
With Mr Noblet, we’ve been investigating how different materials can change — whether by heating, cooling, mixing, or dissolving. The children have enjoyed carrying out experiments and developing their scientific questioning skills.
History – The Anglo-Saxons
Our historians have travelled back in time to Anglo-Saxon Britain! We’ve explored how the Anglo-Saxons influenced modern Britain. The children have really developed their hypothesis skills and thinking critically in the absence of evidence (that has been destroyed or tainted over time).
English – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
In English, we stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia! We’ve been inspired by C.S. Lewis’s classic story to write imaginative narratives and detailed non-chronological reports about our very ouwn AI generated mythical creatures.
Maths – Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division
Our mathematicians have been mastering number sense — exploring place value, practising efficient calculation strategies, and building confidence in multiplication and division.
RE – The Bible
In RE, we’ve been learning all about The Bible and what it means to Christians. A special highlight was our conversation with Reverend Simon, who shared what the Bible means to him personally.
PE – Tennis
We’ve been developing our coordination and control through tennis, learning to serve, rally and score points while showing great teamwork and sportsmanship.
Design & Technology – Doodlers (Electrical Systems)
Our DT project combined creativity and technology as we designed and made electrical “Doodlers” – fun drawing machines powered by circuits!
School-Wide Celebrations
October was Black History Month, and we took time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black individuals throughout history and today.
Parents’ Exhibition
Our Autumn 1 exhibition was a huge success! Parents joined us for a:
-
π Bake Off Technical Challenge – “Spooktacular Rocky Roads”
-
π‘ Showcase of Electrical Doodlers
-
β Fantastic Maths Reasoning Activities
-
βοΈ Talk for Writing
-
πΊοΈ Anglo-Saxon Britain Mapping Project
βοΈ Autumn 2: Continuing Our Journey
English – Legends (The Legend of Gelert)
We’re diving into the world of legends, beginning with the moving tale of Gelert. The children will be developing their storytelling skills and exploring what makes a tale legendary.
Maths – Fractions
This half term, our focus is on fractions – recognising, comparing, ordering, and finding fractions of quantities with increasing confidence. Have a look at the White Rose website to see what your child is learning and feel free to use helpful learning videos attached to offer further support at home or with homework. https://whiteroseeducation.com/parent-pupil-resources/maths/home-learning?year=year-1-new
Science – Properties of Changing Materials (continued)
Our scientific investigations continue as we look deeper into reversible and irreversible changes.
RE – Christmas
As the festive season approaches, we’ll be learning about the meaning of Christmas, its portrayal in the Gospels and its importance to Christians around the world.
PE – Gymnastics
We’re moving from the tennis court to the mats, exploring balances, jumps, and sequences in gymnastics.
Art – Architecture
In Art, we’ll be studying famous architects and experimenting with our own structural designs inspired by real-world buildings.
Geography – Trade
Our geographers will be learning how goods travel around the world, exploring trade links and the journey products take before reaching our homes.
School-Wide Celebrations
This half term, our school community will come together to mark:
-
ποΈ Remembrance Day
-
π Non-Fiction Writing Week
-
π Christmas Celebrations
We’re incredibly proud of everything our class has achieved this term and can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
π Homework and Reminders
Regular homework helps children build independence, consolidate their learning, and share their achievements with family members.
π Reading
Children are expected to read daily at home. Reading regularly supports vocabulary development, comprehension, and overall confidence.
-
Please ensure your child brings their reading book and reading record to school every Monday and Thursday. This allows an adult to check their record, discuss their progress, and listen to them read. Books can be changed on these days once they’ve been finished and signed by an adult at home.
π Homework Grid
Each half term, children receive a homework grid full of creative and curriculum-linked activities.
-
Choose a minumum of one task each week to complete and return it to school. Children are encouraged to take pride in their work and show effort, imagination, and presentation.
βοΈ Spellings
Spellings are given out weekly.
-
Please help your child practise their spellings at home in short, regular sessions. We’ll test these in class at the end of the week and celebrate improvement and effort!
β Times Tables
Quick recall of times tables is vital for confidence in Maths.
-
Children should practise their times tables each week using games, songs, or online tools such as www.ttrockstars.co.uk. Regular practice makes a big difference to mental maths skills and fluency.
πβοΈ PE Days
Please make sure your child wears the correct PE kit and removes jewellery on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thank you for your continued support in helping your child develop excellent learning habits both in and out of school!
Y5 Class Prayer
Dear God,
Now the day is over, we lift our hands and say,
"Thank you heavenly Father, for today.
We're sorry for the wrong things, but glad about the right,
keep us heavenly Father, in Your love tonight"
Amen
